Prof. C. K. Varshney is the former Dean and Professor of
Ecology, School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU),
New Delhi. He has taught at Benaras Hindu University (BHU), University of Delhi,
JNU and was also a Visiting Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology
(AIT), Bangkok.
In early seventies Professor Varshney served the Govt. of India as Secretary of
the National Committee on Environmental Planning and Co-ordination (NCEPC),
which was then the apex body for environmental matters in the central
Government, prior to the formation of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.
He was the founder Secretary of the Indian National Committee for UNESCO?s Man
and the Biosphere programme (MAB). Prof. Varshney was the Member-Secretary of
the official Indian delegation to the historic UN Conference on Human
Environment at Stockholm in 1972 and the Leader of the Indian Delegation to the
Inter-Governmental Meeting of Ramsar Convention at Groningen, The Netherlands.
He has been a member several Expert Committees for Environmental Appraisal of
Ministry of Environment and Forest and has also served as Chairman, Environment
Research Committee (ERC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. He has been
associated with a large number of international organisations (UNEP, UNESCO,
WHO, UNDP, ESCAP, IUCN, WWF, Rockefeller Foundation).
Professor Varshney has guided a large number of doctoral and post-doctoral
scholars, has authored many books, published research papers in internationally
reputed journals. He is widely travelled and a recipient of ?Swami Parnavnanda
Saraswati Award? for Environmental Sciences and Ecology.
